Come join Gallatin National Forest employees and learn why Refuge Point was a vital meeting place after the 1959 Hebgen Lake Earthquake. We will caravan to Refuge Point Trail. Program is geared for beginners. Please dress in layers bring along boots & snowshoes, water, a snack, binoculars. March 6, 2012: Gallatin National Forest Winter Snowshoe Programs
Come join Gallatin National Forest employees and learn about the great outdoors during the winter. Snowshoe Walk in the West Yellowstone area. Meet at the Forest Service building on the north edge of town along Hwy 191 at 1:00pm. For more information please call (406) 823-6961. No experience necessary. March 3, 2012: Yellowstone Rendezvous Ski Race
With the blast of a black powder canon, racers sprint out to compete in a variety of age classes and distances in both classic and freestyle of 5 to 50K lengths. Hundreds of skiers come from across the nation to participate (typically 600-900). The 50 kilometers is over 31 miles and races make two laps on the outmost trails of the Rendezvous system. Five feed stations are located along the course and staffed with local groups and volunteers. Cash prizes are awarded but to many skiers, just finishing is the prize!

March 4, 2012: West Yellowstone Youth Ski Festival
The Youth Ski Festival was created to encourage families to
stay the whole weekend of the Rendezvous Race. This event is a fun way
to wind down after the big race. All kids aged 13 years and younger are
encouraged to play on skis. We will typically offer events such as: a relay
race, an obstacle course, musical chairs, and a sprint. Parents are
encouraged to cheer on all the little skiers.

March 13-18, 2012: Biathlon National Championships and US National Championships for Adaptive Biathlon

Many of us can ski. Some of us can shoot a rifle. FEW can ski AND shoot and among those are an elite group of athletes who will be in West Yellowstone to determine who will be the National Champion in each of several categories. Races include sprint, pursuit, mass start, adaptive sprint and individual. All competition will begin and end at the Biathlon Cabin immediately across from the Biathlon Range. March 15, 2012: Yellowstone Closes to Over-the-Snow Travel
Today is the last full day for winter travel into Yellowstone. Yellowstone's west entrance will reopen to vehicle travel April 20, 2021, when regular vehicle travel begins from the West Entrance.
March 24-25, 2012: Equinox Ski Challenge
The Equinox Ski Challenge is a springtime celebration, a season finale and also an opportunity for skiers to challenge themselves to new levels. This event is ingrained with camaraderie, challenge, and commitment to the well being of the local community. Skiers of ALL abilities are welcome. The goal is to have a lot of fun and also complete as many laps as you can in the 3 Hour, 6 Hour, 12 Hour or 24 Hour divisions. Skiers can enter as a relay team of up to 8 members or as a soloist. Choose your challenge! Kids under 12 are welcome to enter the 24 Minute event, which is always a highlight. The weekend includes a Saturday evening potluck with beverages and an all night bonfire at the start/finish line. How far can you go?

Feet and Roller blades are welcome, too. |

The West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation (WYSEF) will host a Mountain Bike Biathlon on the Rendezvous Ski Trails. This unique event combines mountain biking and target shooting. BYO-Bike and Helmet, rifles provided. Safety clinic included. Spectators are encouraged to attend either day and there is no charge to use the Rendezvous Ski trails during the summer months. September 2012: West Yellowstone Old Faithful Cycle Tour
What a terrific way to wind down a summer of riding and a unique way to experience Yellowstone National Park. Fall is a gorgeous time to be in the Park the elk are bugling, the aspens have turned to gold, and the nearly crowd-free thermal areas continue to beckon the explorer. The supported ride is sixty miles round trip, with options available for one way travel. Cyclists in the tour can take advantage of two feed stations, three sag wagons, on-course bike mechanics, and end the day with a group meal. The tour is limited by the National Park Service to the first 350 riders that complete the online registration. Registration to open on June 15, 2011. Pick up unsold items or your check on Saturday from 12-1pm, 30% of the sale price is donated to WYSEF. Come hungery, the Ski Team will host their annual bake sale on Saturday as well.
Ice-skates of all sizes can be donated for the Chamber's Skating and S'mores nights.

The yips of eager dogs will pierce the winter mornings as mushers prepare for the return of Sled Dog Races to West Yellowstone. Meet the mushers and their canine athletes on Thursday evening during the Holiday Stroll in front of Wild West Pizzeria from 6:00-7:00pm Paws will pound across the Old Airport as sleds and mushers head off down the trail on Friday and Saturday. Races begin each day at 9:00 AM (12 dog teams, followed by 8 dog teams, followed by 6 dog teams) and 1:00 PM (Junior Race – 4 dog teams, 5 miles). Make sure to come before the races start to watch the teams harness up. . A portion of the proceeds from this year's races will benefit the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman, Montana. |

Free Entry To Yellowstone This Weekend
Yellowstone National Park is waving admission fees this weekend in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday.
No matter how you choose enter the park - by car, RV, bus, or on a guided snowmobile or snowcoach trip – the entrance fee to the park will be waived.
Access to the interior of Yellowstone during the winter months is restricted to guided snowmobile and snowcoach trips from the North, West, South, and East entrances. At Old Faithful, the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins and the dining room; the Geyser Grill; the Bear Den Gift Shop; and the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center are all open for the winter season.
